Week 5

2/3-2/5

This week I worked on the Facebook and Instagram for the most part. I created posts on Dysmenorrhea, HPV and the HPV vaccination, stress incontinence, an overactive bladder, and the EndoMarch. WHA is supporting the EndoMarch so I created posts on Instagram and Facebook promoting this event in March. I also ordered magnets for the fridge and for the door frames. The ones for the doors are for communication between Dr. Leach and his medical assistant.

I found the most reputable food addiction scale I could find online for Dr. Leach. This is to be used for food addiction screening if needed. It is the “Yale Food Addiction Scale.”

I also began working on a document for patient use addressing the difference between an OBGYN and certified midwife. Both are healthcare professionals, but patients are often confused about the difference between the two when offered the option. In the next week I plan to meet with one of the midwives and discuss what she does in comparison to an OBGYN for direct, hands-on information.

Competency 2.1.1– Incorporate principle of community organization

Competency 1.4.1– Identify factors that influence health behaviors

Week 4

1/27-1/31

This week I worked on creating a packet for providers on IPV Screening. Following that, I created a document with information on Project Safe as requested by one of the providers at WHA. She wanted to know how to best prepare patients testing positive for IPV. I talked to a representative at Project Safe for a while with a plethora of questions not provided on their site. I asked a lot of questions about their facilities, accommodations, how they speak to those suffering from IPV on their hotline, confidentiality requirements, etc. I compiled all of this information into a document for providers to refer to if a patient asks them details about Project Safe, since it is such a valuable local resource.

In addition to that project, I began working on a document addressing the differences between a certified nurse midwife and an OB/GYN as WHA offers both of these services. Patients are often confused as to the benefits of each and the services that each profession can provide for them.

Finally, as usual, I continued to work on social media posts for Instagram and Instagram stories. I also gained access to the Facebook so this upcoming week I can begin promoting the Instagram posts on Facebook to reach a wider audience.

Competency 1.6– Examine factors that enhance or compromise the process of health education

Week 3

1/22

My main project this week was to construct a screening packet for IPV among women visiting this health clinic. I created a local resources sheet as well as a packet for the providers with important information for identifying IPV in patients and protocols.

Competency 1.1– Plan Assessment Process (Using available resources to conduct assessments, developing assessment plans)

Week 2

1/13 – 1/15

This week I spent my time primarily working on social media posts for the upcoming weeks. In addition, I made multiple worksite wellness flyers for the breakroom. These flyers were friendly reminders for ways to maintain one’s health and also provided resources like TED Talks and self-help books that are highly recommended and promote healthy personal practices. I added “Highlights” on Instagram for different umbrella topics that people can go back and view at their leisure. Finally, I made magnets for the fridge to promote the social media platforms as well as new labels for the brochures handed out to patients in the office.

Competency 2.4 – Develop a scope and sequence for the delivery of health education Competency 2.2– Identify sources of data related to health

My First Blog Post

Becoming Acquainted…

Week 1

1/8/2020

This first week involved just one day of learning the responsibilities of this internship and what previous interns worked on or began to work on. The practice manager, Cheryl, provided me with a jump drive containing the work completed by previous interns and instructions on how to go about managing social media and certain projects. I realized that a big part of this internship is managing the Facebook and Instagram for WHA and disseminating information regarding all things women’s health. On this day, I created a social media plan for future posts and how to grow followers. I made my first post on cervical cancer screening utilizing Canva. I also looked at the “Insights” on Instagram to figure out how many people following the account fell within each age range. Young adults overwhelmingly constitute the majority of the followers so a plethora of posts addressing older populations would not be most beneficial.

Competency 1.7 – Infer needs for Health Education Based on Assessment Findings

Hi, My Name is Brittany!

I am a fourth-year student at the University of Georgia majoring in Health Promotion with an emphasis in Behavioral Medicine. I am Pre-Med and my goal is to go to medical school in the next couple of years. I have volunteered and shadowed in several hospitals alongside various medical professionals. This past summer, I acquired clinical training hours in an underdeveloped neighborhood in Costa Rica. This cemented my future career goals and advanced my passion for working in public health and helping communities at large. In addition to Costa Rica, I have been to several countries in Europe, and would love to continue traveling to new places in the future.

Why Public Health?

I chose the public health route because I wanted the practical aspect of healthcare in conjunction with the scientific basis of it. Society plays just as large of a role in access, affordability, and quality of care as the knowledge needed behind it. Health promotion is looking at a person holistically and figuring out how they can improve their health from all aspects- with medication and also with lifestyle changes.
